In the late 1800's and early 1900's the area around East 11th street was a diverse community and the heart of the African American culture. Between the 1950s and 1980s ethnic relations in Austin were transformed and an unfortunate result was many businesses on East 11th Street had to shut down, many homes in the area were abandoned, and crime increased. Through the efforts of adjacent neighborhoods and community groups. East 11th Street is now home to many local businesses that have brought back to the street and made the East End District once again a vibrant place to live, work, and play. |
